So originally I was gonna review Gears of War 3 today. BUT.... at the insistence of my friend Chris I shall do a review on MvC3 since the Ultimate version of it is coming out soon.
So first off, for those of you who don't know, Marvel vs Capcom is a fighting game that blends Marvel super heroes and villains with Capcom game characters. The matches have the players choose a team of three ending up in a 3v3 tag match. This game is all about the combos ladies and gentlemen. While in other fighting games like Mortalk Kombat, you are lucky to see a 12 hit combo.... in MvC3 you would probably be considered a total noob if 12 hits was the best you could do. I consider myself to be a pretty big rookie at the game and I'm doing combos at around 30 or so hits.
So knowing this, I'm going to say that if you are new to fighting games, DO NOT start off with Marvel vs Capcom 3. There is a "simple" mode to the game, however all this does is limit your choices for combos. It does make doing a characters hyper combos easier, but when going against players who actually know the game, they will be able to get past this fairly easily.
Just because this is a super complicated game, doesn't mean it's bad though. I've actually spent more time on it then I ever thought I'd spend on a fighting game. And I lose a lot too. Normally if I play a game where I only win once for every 5 games I lose, I'd quit. But for some reason I just keep trucking on with this game. I suppose it's the satisfaction you get from finally beating someone that could kick your ass before. So let's just talk good and bad about this game.
The Good: First thing I noticed about the game, were the visuals. The art style for the game is just so colorful and flashy, and the cell shaded characters make it seem like it's actually a comic book in action. It's part of what made me even get the game in the first place. In addition to this The controls can be very smooth. Considering it's such a fast paced game, it's important that your controller can keep up, and for the most part it does a good job of making this so. Oh and when I say fast paced.... I really mean FAST paced. Sometimes I'll get beaten so fast I'll just blink and be like, "Wha...?"
The Bad: So I said the controls are good FOR THE MOST PART. See I've actually gotten to get the handle of the game and one of the only major hurdles I have left... is my 360 controller. This game seems to be meant to be played with a fight stick. Using a fightstick gives you more ways to customize your button layout, and it also much more accurate. Downside though... is that they cost MONEY which sucks for me. Maybe it's just my controller that is funky, but in my opinion, the designers had fightsticks more in mind then regular controllers.
The other problem with the game comes from the mechanics. While for the most part everything works great, the designers did miss some problems. I'm not talking about where the game just blows up or anything. But problems int he sense that players have found ways to cheat the systems. I mentioned that this game is heavy on combo making? Well some characters have specific moves where, if used at the right time, can create an infinite loop. Normally, even if the combo is super long and badass, it still ends. But when these moves can be infinity looped, that's just not fair.
Along witht hat there are some glitches here and there just like in any other games. I personally haven't encountered any, but there are definitely some funny vids out there of giant characters and odd camera shifting.
So taking this into account, I actually like Marvel vs Capcom a lot. It does induce intense rage moments in myself sometimes, but that's just cuz I'm not the best player. The game itself gets 3.5 out of 5 from me. I guess it's a good time to mention I go on a rating system of 5? Might change in the future. I don't know... But anyways! Next time I'll probably be talking about Gears 3 so yeah. Later players.
